How does ExamBank work, and what are the credits all about?
ExamBank offers practice tests online for those learning a trade, as well as those preparing to challenge apprenticeship, Interprovincial Standards "Red Seal", or qualification exams. To access our practice exams, you need to set up an account with us (done by clicking on "How to get an account" at the top of the web page). When this is done, you will specify how many "credits" you would like your account to have.
Every credit that you add to your account will enable you to have access to 4 questions. For example, a 100 question test will require 25 credits to obtain. For clarification, next to each test available on ExamBank it will tell you how many credits it uses.
These credits are specific just to the Trades ExamBank and have no relationship at all to academic credits you may be earning at your school.
The exams are all randomly generated from our database of questions relevant to that specific test. So if you decide to access a test more than once, you will get a different random selection of questions every time. Because of this, every time the exam is accessed, the associated number of credits will be deducted from your account. Of course, this also means that there is value in doing the same test more than once.
When you have used up all the credits in your account, you will not automatically be billed for more - your account will just stop working until you add more. More credits can be added any time by clicking on the "Account Administration" area of the site (at the top of every page) and logging in there. You can also view how the credits in your account have been used and obtain past invoices and receipts from "Account Administration".
To actually write an exam, just click on your trade on the left hand side of the page. This will then bring up a list of all the exams available for that trade, along with information on the number of questions in the exam, how many credits it will use, and how many questions are available overall for that test. To obtain an exam, click on "Start Test" next to the exam you'd like to access and then log in with your username and password. The associated credits will be deducted from your account and then the exam will appear on your screen. You can do the test online and have the computer mark it for you when you're done. Or if you can't finish the test in one sitting or would rather not work in front of the computer, you can print the test as you'd print any web page. But if you do that, don't forget to print the answer key too! Once the test has been printed, go to the bottom of the page to click on the button labelled "Get Answer Key" and then print the answer key as well. Since the tests are all randomly generated every time they are accessed, you can't go back to an old test to get the answer key later if you forget.
